Spencer Leniu played 19 games for Penrith in the 2021 NRL season, including their Grand Final victory. He played 25 games in 2022, again part of the winning team in the Grand Final. In 2023, he played for Penrith in their World Club Challenge loss to St Helens RFC and then joined the Sydney Roosters for the 2024 season. There was a public disagreement between Leniu and coach Trent Barrett. Leniu refused to speak with Thurston, leading to a confrontation. Barrett stated that everyone on the team needs to be committed to the team's success and that personal grievances should be addressed privately.
