India's Waqf Bill: Transparency vs. Community Control
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 aims to introduce transparency and accountability in India's waqf system. Waqf properties, including mosques, madrassas, and land, are currently subject to issues like encroachment and litigation. The proposed changes include mandatory inclusion of non-Muslims in waqf boards, sparking concerns among some Muslims about the potential reduction of their control over these properties. The bill also seeks to rename the Waqf Act, 1995, as the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995, and establish a broader composition for the Central Waqf Council and State Waqf Boards, ensuring representation of Muslim women and non-Muslims. A Joint Parliamentary Committee has been formed to review the bill.
