Does Compulsory Voting Really Guarantee Fair Elections?

Compulsory voting, also known as universal civic duty voting or mandatory voting, requires registered voters to participate in elections. Supporters argue it addresses the paradox of voting, where rational self-interest suggests voting's costs outweigh benefits. However, a study by the Conference Board of Canada found that income inequality is lowest in Scandinavian countries (where compulsory voting doesn't exist) compared to Australia and Belgium, which enforce compulsory voting. A 2015 Swiss canton study showed compulsory voting increased support for leftist policies in referendums by up to 20 percentage points. In Belgium, where compulsory voting has been in place since 1893, support for its abolition is growing. New South Wales, Australia, sends "Apparent failure to vote" notices to those who didn't vote and may impose a $110 penalty plus court costs.
