Sydney Trains Wiring Failure Triggers 36-Hour Outage, Prompting Independent Review

A single train becoming entangled in overhead wiring at Homebush on May 20 caused widespread chaos in Sydney's rail network. Services halted on all but one line, temporarily stranding passengers in carriages and causing rolling delays and cancellations for thousands. The power outage lasted for 36 hours. Premier Chris Minns ordered an independent review into the incident and the effectiveness of $90 million in maintenance funding. Sydney Trains also launched its own internal investigation. As a result of their findings, Sydney Trains will replace a senior bureaucrat responsible for engineering and maintenance on the city's rail network.
