Community organizations use these events to raise funds, and the practice dates back to at least the 1930s. The phrase "democracy sausage" first appeared on social media in 2013 but likely existed in spoken language before that. By 2016, the tradition was so ingrained in Australian culture that Twitter changed its emoji for #ausvotes to a sausage sandwich. The term was even chosen as the Australian Word of the Year by the Australian National Dictionary Centre in 2016.
