Luxury Car Tax Changes to Boost Electric Vehicle Adoption

The Australian Government is updating the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) to encourage the adoption of fuel-efficient vehicles. This aligns with their National Electric Vehicle Strategy goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43 percent by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Key changes include: * Halving the maximum fuel consumption for a fuel-efficient vehicle to 3.5 litres per 100 km, effectively making only electric or partially electric vehicles eligible for the higher threshold. * Aligning the indexation rate for both LCT thresholds with the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Currently, there are two LCT thresholds: one for fuel-efficient vehicles and another for all other luxury vehicles. The government states these amendments will "incentivize" the uptake of electric or partially electric vehicles.
