Calgary Blooms: How Rain Gardens Combat Stormwater and Beautify Neighborhoods

Rain gardens are planted areas designed to capture and filter stormwater runoff before it enters the city's drainage system. They are particularly beneficial in communities with limited space for larger-scale stormwater management solutions like wet ponds. Rain gardens offer several advantages: they protect waterways from sediment and pollutants, attract beneficial wildlife such as birds and dragonflies, enhance neighborhood aesthetics with beautiful plants, and require minimal maintenance due to their use of water-wise species. The captured rainwater is naturally filtered through the soil and plant roots before it rejoins the stormwater system and ultimately flows into rivers. Rain gardens can range in size from small residential installations to larger engineered systems integrated into the city's infrastructure.

Unraveling the Science Behind Devastating Derechos

Derechos are widespread, long-lasting wind storms associated with bands of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. They can produce destruction similar to tornadoes but damage is typically in one direction along a straight path. This straight-line wind damage is sometimes used to describe derecho damage. Derechos develop from bow echoes and require unstable (hot and moist) environments with strong winds aloft. The storms within a derecho are discrete, wind-producing thunderstorms that develop downwind. Derechos can be hazardous to aviation due to embedded microbursts, downbursts, and downburst clusters.

Canada's Two-Tier Heat Warning System Protects Public Health

Two alert and surveillance services are available to healthcare professionals and the public to prevent and mitigate the impacts of heat waves on public health. These alerts originate from public weather watch and warning networks and are issued locally following consultation with expert meteorologists and based on their field experience. The alerts, which rely on ECCC forecasts and take into account the health impacts of heat, inform and mobilize healthcare and social services network (RSSS) stakeholders when an extreme heat wave is anticipated. Since 2010, a system for monitoring and surveillance of heat-related health issues has been in place: SUPREME (system for monitoring and prevention of the sanitary impacts of extreme meteorological events). In June 2017, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), in collaboration with Health Canada and Manitoba Health, developed a new heat warning service for all of Manitoba. To mitigate the potential effects of heat on the health of Manitobans, Manitoba Health has collaborated with partners such as Regional Health Offices, social services, and emergency response organizations to develop a heat warning response system. It is a two-tiered system (heat warnings and prolonged heat warnings) based on the level of heat and the duration of the heat event.

Canada Retaliates with Tariffs on US Imports, Raising Costs and Sparking Trade Dispute

The Canadian government has imposed a 25% tariff on imports of certain goods from the US, including steel and aluminum products and auto imports. Tariffs apply to new and used goods marked as made in the US, produced in the US, or originating in the US. They also apply if there's no evidence the goods are from a country other than the US. Travelers entering Canada, both residents and visitors, must pay applicable tariffs, duties, and taxes on purchased US goods. Residents returning to Canada face these charges on all goods exceeding their personal exemption limit, including groceries. The tariffs impact both Canadians and Americans by increasing consumer costs, potentially risking thousands of jobs, and weakening North America's global competitiveness. By raising prices and reducing demand from Canadian consumers, the tariffs aim to pressure US businesses and the government into reversing their own tariff policies for the benefit of both nations. This also supports Canadian businesses by boosting domestic sales, especially if their exports are affected by US tariffs. Specific examples include a 25% tariff on certain turkey products (cuts, offal, livers) from the US within access commitments. Additionally, a 25% tariff applies to wheat or meslin flour imports from the US.
