Carney: New BC Oil Pipeline 'Project of National Importance'

A new oil pipeline to the British Columbia coast is highly likely to be deemed a project of national importance to the Canadian government. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated this in an interview, emphasizing the economic opportunity, resources, and expertise Canada possesses. He clarified that the proposal would originate from the private sector rather than a government-driven initiative. Carney's comments follow the Senate's passage of a bill to expedite approval for natural resource and infrastructure projects considered of national interest. This includes mines and oil pipelines, along with the removal of some trade barriers between provinces. Despite his role as vice-chair at Brookfield Asset Management, a company that has invested heavily in fossil fuel projects, including a coal port and an oil sands pipeline, Carney maintains that Brookfield is "net zero" across its $575 billion asset portfolio. Critics argue that offsetting fossil fuel projects against "avoided emissions," as Carney suggests, does not constitute a valid definition of net zero.
