X-Class Solar Flare Triggers Global Radio Blackouts

Recent back-to-back solar flares, including the strongest of the year, have caused shortwave radio blackouts on at least five continents. The powerful X-class flare erupted from an active region on the Sun, releasing streams of plasma and charged particles into space. While solar storms can sometimes cause spectacular displays of the northern lights, they can also disrupt radio communications. This period of increased solar activity, known as solar maximum, is expected to continue throughout the year, potentially leading to more solar storms in the coming months. Solar flares are classified based on their intensity, with X-class flares being the most powerful. Radio blackouts caused by solar flares are rated using a five-level NOAA Space Weather Scale, directly linked to the flare's peak soft X-ray output.

Unveiling the Traditions and History of Victoria Day in Canada

Victoria Day is an annual holiday in Canada observed on the last Monday preceding May 25th. It commemorates the birthday of Queen Victoria and is a unique tradition in the country. While not a paid public holiday across all provinces, it is recognized as such in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Celebrations often include fireworks, parades, and a shift towards lighter-colored summer clothing. After Queen Victoria's death in 1901, Parliament established May 24th (or 25th if the 24th fell on a Sunday) as a legal holiday named Victoria Day. During King Edward VII's reign (1901-1910), his birthday was celebrated on this day by yearly proclamation. In 1952, an amendment moved the celebration to the Monday preceding May 25th.
