Legendary war correspondent Sandy Gall: A life dedicated to reporting global conflicts

Sandy Gall began his journalism career as a trainee sub-editor at the Aberdeen Press and Journal in 1952. He joined ITN as a foreign reporter and troubleshooter in 1963 and also worked as a newscaster on News at Ten between 1970 and 1991. Gall reported from numerous world conflicts during his 60-year career, starting with Reuters before moving to ITN. He met Eleanor Smyth, a Foreign Office employee, in Budapest while covering the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Gall was born on October 1, 1927, in Penang, British Malaya (now Malaysia), to Henderson and Jean Gall. He graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1952 with a Master of Arts degree in French and German. Gall founded the Sandy Gall Afghanistan Appeal in 1983 to provide aid and medical care to land mine victims.
