Breaking Barriers: Uriah Rennie's Legacy as Football's First Black Premier League Referee

Uriah Duddley Rennie (1959-2025) was a Jamaican football referee known as the Premier League's first black referee. He began refereeing in local leagues in 1979 and progressed to the Football League list of referees in 1994. In 1997, he made history officiating a match between Derby County and Wimbledon. Rennie was known for his tall stature and expertise in kick-boxing and aikido, which he used to confidently handle disagreements with protesting players. Beyond refereeing, he served as a magistrate in Sheffield since 1996 and actively campaigned for equality and inclusion in sports, mental health support, and addressing deprivation. He was appointed president of Hallam F.C. in 2010 and became chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University in 2025.
