The Panama Canal is an 82-kilometer waterway connecting the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. President Theodore Roosevelt oversaw its construction, a long-term United States goal made possible by the Hay-Pauncefote Treaty of 1901 which abrogated the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty. Completed in 1914, the canal symbolized U.S. technological prowess and economic power. U.S. control of the canal eventually strained relations with Panama, but at the time it was considered a major foreign policy achievement. The Torrijos–Carter Treaties led to the canal's handover to Panama in 1977.

The Wall Street Crash of 1929, also known as the Great Crash, was a major stock market crash in the United States that began in late October 1929. A sharp decline in prices occurred on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), ending in mid-November. Selling intensified in mid-October, with "Black Tuesday" hitting Wall Street on October 29th when investors traded a massive 16 million shares. Several factors contributed to the crash, including rampant speculation during the Roaring Twenties and abuses by utility holding companies. The crash had devastating effects, leading directly to the Great Depression in Europe and impacting the US economy severely. The Federal Reserve's response to the crisis was criticized, with economists learning valuable lessons about the role of central banks in managing financial markets.
