Honoring All Who Served: Understanding Veterans Day

Veterans Day commemorates the service of all U.S. veterans. It is distinct from Memorial Day, which honors those who died while in military service. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day and celebrated the end of World War I on November 11th. In 1954, it was renamed Veterans Day at the urging of major veteran organizations. Congress amended the bill to change "Armistice" to "Veterans". The holiday is observed on the fourth Monday in October and is a federal holiday. The official spelling is Veterans Day without an apostrophe because it is a day for honoring all veterans, not a day that belongs to them.
