The Federal Reserve's benchmark interest rate was last recorded at 4.50 percent. Fed Chair Powell stated it's too early to determine if inflation or unemployment will be the greater concern, and the Fed doesn't need to rush into adjusting rates. The federal funds rate is the interest rate at which depository institutions trade federal funds (balances held at Federal Reserve Banks) with each other overnight. The effective federal funds rate is influenced by the Federal Reserve through open market operations. Interest Rate in the United States averaged 5.41 percent from 1971 until 2025, reaching an all-time high of 20 percent in March of 1980 and a record low of 0.25 percent in December of 2008.

Federal lands are lands in the United States owned and managed by the federal government. The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld broad federal government powers over these lands. Congress also recognizes the value of public lands and directs the Executive Branch to manage activities on them. Acquired lands, a category of public lands under federal management, are obtained through purchase, condemnation, gift, or exchange. The Federal Lands Access Program (Access Program) was established to improve transportation facilities on or near federal lands. It supplements state and local resources for roads, transit systems, and other transportation facilities, focusing on high-use recreation sites and economic generators. The program is funded by the Highway Trust Fund.

Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, died three days after a traffic stop by five Memphis police officers on January 7, 2023. Body camera footage shows officers approaching Nichols's vehicle with guns drawn, pulling him out, and pepper-spraying him. An officer fired a stun gun as Nichols ran. The beating continued until he fell to the ground. A former paramedic who responded testified that no one told him Nichols had been punched, kicked, or hit in the head. The Shelby County District Attorney's Office released the footage following public pressure. Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis called the circumstances "horrific." The Justice Department and FBI are conducting civil rights investigations, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading a separate probe.
