Missed Warnings and Misdirected Attention: How Night Vision Goggles May Have Contributed to Helicopter-Jet Collision

At 8:47 p.m. EST, seconds before a collision, the air traffic controller asked the helicopter crew if they had the CRJ (regional jet) in sight. One second later, the jet's crew received a traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) alert and audible warning "traffic; traffic." A helicopter crew member was talking to the controller during this time, which may have caused them to miss part of the transmission. Fifteen seconds before the crash, the helicopter co-pilot asked the pilot if they had visual contact with the jet. The helicopter pilots may have also missed information about the jet turning towards a different runway. Helicopter pilots typically rely on barometric readings but the helicopter's black box captured its radio altitude. Experts suggest the night vision goggles worn by the pilots, combined with a plane taking off just before the collision, could have caused them to misdirect their attention.

From BBQ to Legislation: A Look at the Evolution of Juneteenth Celebrations

Barbecue is central to most Juneteenth celebrations. Texas was the first state to officially recognize Juneteenth as a holiday in the late 1970s. In 2013, the U.S. Senate acknowledged Lula Briggs Galloway's work in bringing national recognition to Juneteenth. The National Juneteenth Observance Foundation advocated for Congressional designation of Juneteenth as a national day of observance. Opal Lee, the racial justice movement, and the Congressional Black Caucus spurred the Senate to unanimously pass the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act in 2021, establishing it as a federal holiday. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, its implementation was delayed in areas still under Confederate control. In Texas, enslaved people remained bound until June 19, 1865, when General Gordon Granger announced the proclamation's enforcement. This day became known as "Juneteenth."
