Pope Francis' Simple Funeral Set for April 26th in St. Peter's Square

Pope Francis's funeral will be held on Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 AM in St. Peter's Square. The service will be simpler than previous papal funerals, following Pope Francis's instructions. Archbishops and bishops will gather beforehand in the Constantine Wing. The coffin will be laid in the square in front of St. Peter's Basilica at the start of the Mass. Approximately 250 cardinals, bishops, priests, and religious brothers and sisters will attend. The funeral Mass is the first of nine daily Masses to be held at St. Peter’s through May 4th, known as the Novemdiales. The service will conclude with prayers for Pope Francis and a final commendation prayer. Pope Francis' body will be transferred to St. Peter's Basilica on Wednesday to lie in state until his funeral. After the Mass, the procession will move into St. Peter’s Basilica and then to the Basilica of St. Mary Major for entombment. The funeral will be broadcast worldwide.
