US Vice-President JD Vance expressed optimism about a potential trade deal with the UK following recent advancements in discussions. UK government sources concur, reporting positive progress in negotiations. British business and trade minister Sarah Jones echoed this sentiment, highlighting the UK's favorable position for a deal. However, she emphasized the need for thorough ministerial examination of any agreement. Britain's new ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, possesses extensive experience in trade negotiations from his previous role as a European Union trade commissioner. The EAFE index (representing developed markets excluding the US and Canada) has a dividend yield of 3.0%, which is significantly higher than the S&P 500's 2.25% yield. This difference in yields, known as basis points, offers investors seeking income potential an attractive alternative to traditional US equities. Argus Research, having recently expanded its global coverage, recommends several international dividend stocks with a "long-term BUY" rating from their analysts.

The Unique Geography and History of the Persian Gulf

The Persian Gulf is noticeably asymmetrical. It has the deepest water along its Iranian coast and a broad, shallow area along the Arabian coast (less than 120 feet deep). Freshwater input is limited, with only some ephemeral streams on the Iranian side south of Bushehr. The seafloor often consists of hardened calcium carbonate due to warm, salty waters. Waves create coastal islands and lagoons from these sediments. High salinities and temperatures cause calcium sulfate and sodium chloride precipitation, forming extensive salt flats (sabkhas) along the coast. The Persian Gulf Basin is Cenozoic in origin, related to the subduction of the Arabian Plate under the Zagros Mountains. It's recognized as the "Persian Gulf" by the International Hydrographic Organization. Historically, the Sassanid Persian empire controlled the entire gulf during the seventh century. Dolphins and finless porpoises are common marine mammals in the region, while larger whales and orcas are rarer. Oil-rich countries bordering the gulf are often referred to as the Persian Gulf States (excluding Iraq). A naming dispute exists between "Persian Gulf" and "Arabian Gulf." While many internationally recognize "Persian Gulf," some Arab countries prefer "Gulf" or "Arabian Gulf". This dispute stems from historical usage and political considerations. The Geographic Names Service lists "Persian Gulf" as the conventional name, with variations like "Gulf of Iran", "Gulf of Ajam," and "Arabian Gulf".
