Three major fires broke out in Attica on July 17th in Kalyvia, Loutraki, and Dervenochoria. Two more major fires ignited in Magnesia on July 26th, in Almyros and near Velestino. The widespread fires have resulted in smog across much of Greece. A volunteer firefighter died battling a blaze in the Ilia region on the Peloponnese peninsula after being injured. The towns of Varnavas and Vothonas near where the wildfires started are almost entirely surrounded by scorched land. The Athens suburb of Vrilissia was also heavily affected by the fires. Brutal heat waves have dried out the land, creating favorable conditions for the rapid spread of wildfires.
