During the 19th century Italian unification, San Marino provided refuge for those persecuted for supporting it, including Giuseppe Garibaldi and his wife Anita. San Marino doesn't use a traditional value-added tax (VAT) system but imposes withholding taxes on various income types. Public transport in San Marino consists mainly of bus lines connecting the country's cities. Most lines originate in the City of San Marino, serving other cities like Borgo Maggiore, Domagnano, Serravalle, Dogana, and San Marino Hospital. The Akademio Internacia de la Sciencoj San Marino (International Academy of Sciences San Marino) was known for using Esperanto as its teaching and scientific publication language. San Marino has federations for football, basketball, and volleyball. Mount Titano, with its three peaks topped by ancient fortifications, is a prominent landmark visible from miles away. In 2008, Mount Titano and San Marino's historic center were designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Italy is San Marino's primary trading partner, supplying all its electrical power through an electrical grid. San Marino is highly urbanized, with the three main cities housing nearly two-thirds of the population.
