Taurine in Energy Drinks May Fuel Blood Cancer Growth, Study Finds

A new study suggests that taurine, an ingredient commonly found in energy drinks, may increase the risk of blood cancers like leukemia. Researchers at the University of Rochester discovered that leukemia cells rely on taurine transporters to absorb taurine from the bone marrow. Once inside the cells, taurine fuels glycolysis, a process that breaks down glucose for energy and promotes cancer cell growth. Experiments using mouse models and human leukemia cells showed that blocking taurine entry into cancer cells inhibited leukemia growth. The study suggests that high-dose taurine supplementation may be detrimental for individuals with blood cancers.
