Juneteenth, also known as Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day, Jubilee Day, or Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday celebrated annually on June 19th. It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln in 1863, it wasn't until June 19, 1865, that General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery there. Celebrations began shortly after with music, barbecues, prayer services, and other activities. As Black people migrated from Texas to other parts of the country, the tradition of Juneteenth spread. Juneteenth has evolved over time, mirroring shifts in the African American experience. After World War II, a new sense of pride emerged alongside the Great Migration, further spreading the celebration across the United States.
